Train Travel is the way to go!
Per my favorite guidebook author (Rick Steve): " Rail passes are almost always a smart buy for Switzerland, with its fairly high pay-as-you-go ticket costs and excellent transportation system. Switzerland-only passes are a particularly good deal, as they cover nearly all transport in Switzerland — not only trains, but buses, boats, and many high-mountain lifts — and come in a variety of permutations." As you can see from the adjacent map one way fares are quite expensive.
Swiss trains are efficient, comfortable, and run like clockwork. They're also timed to intersect with the buses, boats, and mountain railways conveniently. Of course, you can choose to rent a car, particularly if you'd like to explore further afield. However, many of the places we'll be going are only reachable by foot or public transport, so you'll probably end up buying a train pass as well.
The journey from Zurich (or Geneva) to Murren may involve several changes of train, a ride on a cable car, and another train; taking around 4 hours. But don't worry about your luggage; it's possible to check your luggage at the Zurich airport and have it meet you in Murren .... No Schlepping required!!! At least getting to Murren. Once there, it's a 10 minute walk from the train station to the chalet, so hopefully your suitcase has wheels!
As it gets closer to departure, I'll have complete instructions available so don't worry about the logistics now. I've actually got a great track record; more than 10 people have successfully navigated their way to meet up on previous trips, including Masha traveling from home all by herself, Raya & Patrick traveling by train from Venice, and Christine Maier driving from her home in Germany!!!
Swiss Rail passes come in a wide variety of of duration and coverage; even 1st & 2nd class. There are also flex passes where you can travel 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 days within 1 month. For some travelers, the Swiss Half Fare card may also be an option. Over the years we've always traveled 2nd class and been completely satisfied. You can explore the Swiss Travel System website for complete information.
